A generator sizing calculator helps estimate how many watts you may need to run essential household equipment during a power outage. The calculator below adds selected running loads, estimates startup surge, and applies a safety buffer so you can compare generator size ranges more realistically.
This tool is designed for planning, not final electrical design. Always confirm appliance labels, generator ratings, cord limits, transfer equipment requirements, and local code before connecting backup power to a home.

Generator Sizing Calculator
Estimate the generator size needed to run common home essentials during a power outage.
How Generator Sizing Works
Generator sizing starts with running watts, which are the watts needed after equipment is already operating. Motor-driven equipment, such as refrigerators, freezers, sump pumps, well pumps, and furnace blowers, may also need extra startup watts for a short period.
The most common mistake is adding only the running watts and ignoring startup surge. A generator that looks large enough on paper may still struggle if several motor loads start at the same time.
Why Startup Surge Matters
Startup surge is the brief extra power some appliances need when motors or compressors first turn on. Refrigerators, freezers, pumps, and air conditioners often have higher starting watts than running watts.
This calculator estimates startup need by combining the full running load with the largest additional startup surge. That approach is still an estimate, but it is more realistic than treating every appliance as a simple steady load.
What This Calculator Does Not Replace
This generator sizing calculator does not replace appliance labels, manufacturer documentation, electrician guidance, transfer switch requirements, carbon monoxide safety rules, or local electrical code.
If you plan to connect a generator to home wiring, use approved transfer equipment and a qualified electrician. Never connect a portable generator to a home through a dryer outlet, wall outlet, or improvised backfeed method.
